What is Polyurea Waterproofing?
Polyurea waterproofing is a flexible, high-performance coating system. It is used in terraces, roofs, pools, foundations, bridges, tunnels, and retaining walls where waterproofing is required. Thanks to its high abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, and chemical durability, it provides effective waterproofing in the areas where it is applied. It also delivers long-lasting results.
This material, composed of polyol and isocyanate, is a type of polymer. Once the components are mixed, it rapidly polymerizes. It becomes ready for use in a short time and cures quickly after application.
Polyurea coating is one of the most commonly preferred options for waterproofing due to its properties:
- Extremely short curing time: It adheres and cures effectively shortly after application, forming a waterproof layer. Its rapid curing is especially advantageous for projects with tight deadlines.
- High elasticity: It withstands structural movements and temperature changes. Its flexible structure minimizes the risk of cracking and delamination.
- Chemical and physical resistance: It resists chemicals, physical impacts, abrasion, and UV radiation. This durability is a key reason for its long-lasting waterproofing performance.
- Spray application: Provides a seamless coating, leaving no weak points where water can seep.
- Environmentally friendly: Solvent-free formulation makes it safe for indoor use and sensitive areas.
Professional application is strongly recommended to achieve optimal results; improper application may lead to unsatisfactory performance or other problems.
Advantages of Polyurea Coating
- Quick preparation and application using specialized equipment, saving time.
- Fills existing cracks and prevents new ones from forming.
- Prevents moisture and dampness-related problems, protecting against corrosion and wear.
- Effectively blocks water leaks from ceilings, floors, foundations, and walls.
- Fully adheres to surfaces, preventing drips or uneven coverage.
- Can be applied to vertical surfaces as well.
- Fire-resistant and does not easily ignite.
These advantages make polyurea coating a highly preferred solution for areas requiring reliable waterproofing.
Applications of Polyurea Waterproofing
Polyurea coating is suitable for numerous applications due to its rapid curing, elasticity, durability, and strong adhesion:
- Building foundations and floors
- Roofs and terraces
- Industrial floors
- Water tanks and wastewater facilities
- Pools and aquariums
- Bridges, tunnels, and metro constructions
- Stadiums
- Underground and aboveground pipelines
- Airports and refineries
- Defense infrastructure
- Expansion joints
Polyurea can also be effectively applied to concrete, metal, fiberglass, and wood surfaces.
How to Apply Polyurea Coating
- Surface Preparation: Metal surfaces are sandblasted, and concrete surfaces are ground. The surface must be clean and smooth. Any protrusions or gaps must be removed to prevent bubbling or cracking.
- Primer Application: Ensures the coating adheres effectively. For concrete, a two-component epoxy-based primer is preferred. Approximately 300 g/m² is applied, and it should dry for 6–12 hours depending on weather conditions.
- Polyurea Application: Using specialized equipment, the polyurea is sprayed at the correct temperature and pressure. A layer of approximately 2 mm is applied, ensuring strong waterproofing. Once cured, the polyurea coating is complete.
Polyurea Coating Prices in 2025
Prices vary depending on the type and quantity of polyurea:
- Cold polyurea: Two-component product. 26.5 kg costs 4,260 TL.
- Pure polyurea: Hot-applied option. 420 kg costs 95,000 TL.
